The University of Cape Town (UCT) became a member of prestigious cybersecurity forum

Lithuanian cybersecurity experts from NRD Cyber Security have supported Africa’s number one university in gaining membership of a prestigious cybersecurity forum.

University ambitious in cyber security

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has always been one of the top universities in Africa and has claimed the number one spot in the entire continent in the QS World University Rankings for the last 3 years. The university aims to set the example not only in the academic community, but also has an objective to act as a leader in information and cybersecurity culture within the higher education sector in South Africa by assisting other education institutions on their cybersecurity journey. In order to do so and enhance its cyber security maturity, UCT required maturing the existing Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT). This process involves aligning CSIRT activities as per best international practices.

Part of a prestigious forum

UCT’s focus on cybersecurity has seen the institution honoured as the first of its kind in Africa to be granted full membership of the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), the recognised global leader in incident response. UCT is only the third organisation in South Africa and the 14th on the continent to be listed as a full member, in recognition of the significant efforts made by the university’s CSIRT to ensure its network and digital assets remain protected.

“FIRST membership is a significant milestone in the University of Cape Town’s cybersecurity journey. By partnering with NRD we were able to achieve not just the membership but also formalisation of a number of our CSIRT processes.” said by UCT CSIRT team leader Roshan Harneker.

Founded in 1990, FIRST is a prestigious forum recognised as a global leader in incident response. It has only 483 members from 84 countries, representing the public, private and education sectors. UCT was assisted in its application by NRD Cyber Security, a cybersecurity consultancy and technology deployment company, specializing in incident response and research. The membership allows UCT access to a network of the world’s leading security experts. The university will also receive support in effectively and proactively managing IT security-related incidents.
